Affirmations before a job interview

For the twenty minutes in the waiting room.

An interview compresses months of hope into half an hour, and the body treats that like danger: dry mouth, fast heart, a mind that rehearses the worst question. None of that means you are unprepared. These lines are for the wait, not for pretending you feel calm.

I prepared for this, and what I know does not disappear because I am nervous.

  2. 02

They invited me here. Someone already saw something worth an hour of their time.

  3. 03

I am allowed a pause before I answer. Thinking looks like competence.

  4. 04

I can be nervous and clear at the same time.

  5. 05

This conversation is two people finding out if the fit is right, in both directions.

  6. 06

One clumsy answer does not erase the rest of what I say.

I do not have to be the perfect candidate. I have to be an honest one.

  8. 08

Whatever happens today, I will still have everything I knew walking in.

How to use these

One line, then one small thing.

Pick one line and read it on the exhale, three slow breaths, while you wait. Do not try to feel confident: try to feel present. Then name one specific thing you know you do well, and let that be the thought you walk in with.

When it helps

Moments these were written for

  • In the car or the waiting room beforehand
  • In the silence right after a question you fumbled
  • The night before, when your mind starts rehearsing

FAQ

Questions about this moment

Do affirmations actually help before an interview?
They help when they are believable. "I will get this job" tends to bounce off, because you cannot know that. "I prepared for this, and what I know does not disappear because I am nervous" is true, which is why your mind can hold on to it while your heart rate is up.
What if I am too anxious to think straight?
Put the words down and give your body something to do first: breathe out longer than you breathe in for about a minute, feel your feet on the floor, then read one line. Anxiety lives in anticipation, and both the breath and the sentence live in the present.
